I miss being called an idiot
It's all about feedback. And feedback has to be direct and honest and also not intentionally harmful.
Many times, most of us, are just idiots
We have become so sensitive to what others think of us, to what they tell us, to other people's opinions that this sensitivity is impeding getting the right kind of feedback, unless that is positive.
Throughout my career and life I have done things I shouldn't have and have been called an idiot to few times, even though I would deserved it. And looking back, I think it would have been useful to just be told I was an idiot for doing those things.
For being away too much from the loved ones, because of work.
For building a piece of software, without having actual, promising customers for it.
For picking opportunities based on the wrong decision framework (nb. that decision should always be based on who you will be working with and never based on what the team will do together),
All these, and many other, would have required very direct feedback, or simply put, people around should have just called me an idiot for doing or not doing certain important things.
I also miss being able to call others idiots, when they need to hear it
The feedback needs to be bidirectional. I am not looking for being called that and not being able to return the favor. Reciprocity is important.
So feel free to call me that, when you think I should be called an idiot. But keep in mind that this opens the reciprocity pathway, I will call you an idiot when I think you deserve it.
